5-Star + Seal of Approval (+ 2017 Top 10 Candidate) for Wrath of the Jötunn

I'm excited to announce ethat "Into the Wintery Gale: Wrath of the Jötunn" (AAW Games / Adventureaweek.com) has received a 5-star + seal of approval rating from Endzeitgeist! The title was also made a candidate for the Top Ten of 2017!

"Let me elaborate: This is, in essence, a massive sandbox with a really strong narrative that resounds with themes of love, loss, glory; this feels like a larger than life tale, straight from a mythology that could have been. This module at once manages to evoke themes of old-school masterpieces, the sense of myth, the sense of plausibility and the new-school focus on a captivating narrative, with tons of read-aloud text, diverse challenges..." -- EZG

GM Tips with Satine Phoenix & BJ Hensley

Well, that was very cool experience. Taking a few minutes to catch up with my favorite D&D-themed show (GM Tips with Satine Phoenix) [my primary reason for subscribing to Alpha], and I’m excited to see this episode’s guest is an awesome person I’ve worked with (BJ Hensley). Then while I’m watching (at about the 9-minute mark) the conversation shifts to an adventure that I wrote. It was very neat to see my name on the cover show up on screen.

Neat personal moment aside, it’s a really fantastic episode about teaching through gaming, and about how to get kids involved in tabletop RPGs. A must-watch for gamer parents or anyone who works with children.

There’s also some super exciting news about a new license acquired by Playground Adventures. I won’t spoil it, but I will say congratulations to the Playground Adventures team; there’s no better group of folks that I could imagine working on the project!

The New Cartographer's Cache

My previously free PDF map series Cartographer's Cache has been retooled to serve as the wheelhouse marketplace for my VTT Maps Patreon.

In turn, a new regular series of free map releases is planned for the near future through a new venue currently being negotiated with a publisher.
Cartographer’s Cache is a collection consisting of maps created by Justin Andrew Mason as part of his VTT Maps Patreon.

Contributing patrons wanted to know if there was a way to go back and get the maps released during months before they became patrons or in months they missed funding. Cartographer’s Cache is the solution to that request. Each set contains all the maps released by Justin Andrew Mason via his Patreon for a specific month.

Both 600 dpi high-resolution and 300 dpi VTT-friendly versions are included of every map. All maps are in JPG format and are sized to fit a full 8.5 x 11 inch page. Three versions of each map are included with this product:

• VTT Map – No grids, no numbers, no icons/symbols, all rooms shown

• Player Map – With grids, no numbers, player-relevant icons/symbols, and secret rooms are hidden

• GM Map – With grids, with numbers, all icons/symbols, all rooms shown

A new volume to this series will be added monthly including all maps released via my Patreon for the relvant time-frame. The number of maps included in each volume is indicated on the front cover, but will fluctuate depending on the funding status of my Patreon account.

There will be at least 4-5 maps in a volume (Saturday map releases), but the number per volume could grow to contain many more depending on Patreon goals. The price for a volume of Cartographer's Cache will remain $7.99 ($2.99/month more than current top-tier patrons pay).

Over $1,000,000.00 in Tabletop RPG Kickstarters

As of this week, Kickstarter campaigns that I designed for 3PP tabletop RPG projects have now raised over $1,000,000.00 (zeros for days!). That feels like an accomplishment, and I thought it was worth noting in its own post.

My various work on tabletop RPG projects includes: project planning, project management, graphics and logo design, animation and video, product mock-ups and specs, advertising (print, digital and social media), campaign layout, direct customer support, data analysis, fulfillment logistics, and more.

To date, I have run 15 campaigns, two of which were selected as "staff pick" features on Kickstarter. I have designed successful Kickstarter campaigns for AAW Games, Kobold Press, Rogue Genius Games, Legendary Games, and Paths To Adventure (self).

Flashback: Tabletop RPG iGoogle Gadgets

I had nearly completely forgotten about these, until the "Facebook Memories" feature reminded me of a 7-year old post this morning. Did anyone else make use of when Google did the iGoogle thing with gadgets you could add to your search home page?

Nearly a decade back, I used it regularly and developed several tabletop RPG gadgets that were quite popular at the time. In fact a few of them were featured, and Google Labs sent me a swag bag of Google-branded promotional goodies that I still have stashed away here somewhere.

Anyway, since Facebook was kind enough to remind me about them, I figured it would make a fun flashback article here on the blog. So, here are the details on a couple of those gadgets I developed back in 2005-2009.

Obsidian Portal Plugin - A custom iGoogle gadget that I developed which interfaced with the ObsidianPortal.com service. It was the first external application to make use of the Obsidian Portal API which had been released a few weeks earlier. The gadget supported standard formatting via HTTP streaming XML, and integrated in most of the navigation functionality of Dungeons & Dragons campaigns hosted on the service. Required initial call via "campaign slug" to reference the datasource.

Random Dungeon Map Generator - A custom iGoogle gadget that I developed which utilized a complex algorithm to generate relative grid coordinates for rooms, then a series of randomly placed doors/openings based on those coordinates, and finally a second algorithm to map out a path from opening to opening at the nearest rooms to create the halls. Each map was totally random and downloadable as a large high-resolution JPG format image.

Polydice Roller - A basic randomized dice roller I developed for iGoogle which randomly generated roll results for 5 sets of 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, 20-sided, 30-sided, and 100/%-sided dice. Simple and straight forward.

Dice rollers are a dime-a-dozen these days, but back when I developed this (in the dark-ages before smart phones and apps), having a self-contained dice roller installed on your search home page with actually kind of nifty.

Advanced Polydice Roller - (Thinking of VTT before it was common place) - Like the basic version of the Polydice roller, except I developed this version to allow for completely custom dice combinations with modifiers and up to 100 rolls of each set. Since this gadget is heavily used, and I had several requests to provide a service for "blind rolls, " I added features that allow players to roll a defined set of dice, and have it automatically e-mailed to the GM. This prevents players from cheating by re-rolling until they get the results they want. Also, I built in a version of "anti-spam" that allows e-mail addresses to opt-out of getting APD results.

There were many others, most of which I don't have handy screen grabs to display here. Luckily for prosperity's sake, at some point in 2010 I posted these four to Facebook, and so can share them here today. Enjoy the flashback!

Oh, and just for fun, I fished out the old Google swag bag that Google Labs sent me for being a featured developer. Here's a pic.

This means that October will have an extra map added!

Leonid Ponomarev is also converting both versions over for use in the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop.

Patreon Summary #2: August 2017

The second month of my VTT Maps Patreon has concluded, and four maps were released for each Saturday in the month. There was neither growth or loss in the number of contributing patrons this month.

While I would love to see more patrons hop on board and help to unlock some of the great goal rewards, I'm more than happy to settle for keeping all  my awesome patrons on board for another month. I truly appreciate the support!

Big Book of Maps: August 2017 Summary

Yesterday I sent out the Month End Summary for Aguust 2017 for The Big Book of Maps for Tabletop Roleplaying Games project.

While we pushed way ahead of schedule again this month (breaching the 5-months ahead of schedule mark), we didn't quite get as much released as I had hoped due to an unexpected increase (30-or-so) in the number of publisher-commissioned maps for the day job; as well as a the release of a couple of other books I wrote. But as it stands, we're pushing on nearer to wrapping up the creation phase of this project way ahead of schedule.

As of this afternoon, the project stats are as follows:
  • 150 Maps Released
  • 320 Map icons Released
  • 156 days Ahead of Release Schedule
  • The Entire Project is 76.92% complete
Check out the full update here!

In other news, I have already started the book layout process including theme, structure, and creating the index / table of contents which will function as a sort of easy reference including map thumbnail, map title, page number(s), and map # (for reference to VTT maps files).

The organization of the book will include two versions of each map on either side of a page. The "Player Map" will be displayed first, followed on the inverse with the "GM Map" (which includes room numbers and hidden/secret areas). The books will not include the VTT (plain) versions of the maps. It just didn't make sense to me for them to be included outside of the digital format backers are already being provided.I don't have an exact page count yet, but this does mean that the book will clock in at well over 450 pages.

The VTT maps will be released as individual products on DriveThruRPG when the book is released to the public. These will be priced at $2 each. Backers at the $20 and higher will be provided an optional link to a free bundle including that includes them all just in case you want to manage your VTT files via your DTRPG library.

Fantasy Grounds: Into the Wintery Gale

It's finally out in the wild! The Fantasy Grounds version of Into the Wintery Gale has been released. This is very exciting for me as this was the last pending aspect promised to backers of the original Kickstarter. After hundreds of thousands of words, hundreds of pieces of art, a whole series of books, a hardbound mega-adventure, side-quests, a bestiary, magic item compendium, miniatures and tokens, poster play maps, terrain, and cards, I can state the project is now 100% complete. Skol!

This product is available for purchase at Adventureaweek.com, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, Paizo, Fantasy Grounds Marketplace, and on Steam.

Seven Month Streak @ Paizo

Crud! My really neat streak is broken. For the past seven months straight, every Paizo weekly newsletter has featured one or more products I worked on for various publishers. Not this week. Well, technically there is one that I did "ghost design" for which was mentioned (i.e. I'm not listed in the credits, but I did get paid), but I'm not counting that one for the streak. At least I have a bunch of new stuff in the pipeline. Maybe next streak will be longer!

Starfinder: Muinmos Star System Set

My contributions to the first in what promises to be a long line of products for Paizo's Starfinder RPG have been released by AAW Games (Adventureaweek.com)! Introducing the Muinmos Star System Set!

"Star System Sets offer new planets to explore, dangers to overcome, lifeforms to study, and cultures to document. Modular enough for any campaign, each double-sided card presents a complete ruleset for ease of reference, allowing GMs to fill in the blank spots on their star charts.

Card types include Race, Planet, Character Options, Equipment, Monsters, and Mini-Adventure. Each set is available à la carte or as a six-card bundle."

Muinmos Star System: Race -- Sideribus Volunt by Justin Andrew Mason

Once from the world of Aventyr, the Sideribus Volunt are an ancient race of spacefaring humans who have adapted to life in microgravity. Without a world of their own, the Sideribus Volunt claim a network of immense space station libraries as home. With their vast and interconnected database, the greatest treasure of the Sideribus Volunt is also their greatest weapon. For in the depths of a wild and uncharted galaxy, knowledge truly is power.

Fun fact: I've been sprinkling the ancient history and the origins of the Sideribus Volunt into Aventyr adventures and content for the past three years, so it's fun to see that process now come to fruition with these Starfinder releases today.

This product is available for purchase via Adventureaweek.com, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, and Paizo.

Patreon Summary #1: July 2017

The very first month of my Vtt Maps Patreon has concluded, and (since there were five Saturdays) the month saw five maps (shown below) released to patrons. The month ended with 15 new patrons raising a total of $59 per month.

I feel like this is a pretty positive beginning for a start-up Patreon. It will be interesting to see how frequently the numbers increase throughout the year. Honestly, I'm not sure what to expect moving forward, but I know I'm very grateful to the patrons who helped me get this project off the ground this month!

Big Book of Maps: July 2017 Summary

Yesterday I sent out the Month End Summary for July 2017 for The Big Book of Maps for Tabletop Roleplaying Games project.

July was the most productive month yet! I released a total of 46 new maps, and one new map icon set. I continue with the break-neck pace of releasing at least one map per day, every day -- and many days I have released two (or three). It's a heavy workload, but the effort is paying off dividends as the project is now more than four months ahead of schedule!

As of yesterday's update to Kickstarter, a total of 118 maps and 240 map icons have been released. The project is 124 days ahead of the release schedule, and the entire project is over 60% complete!

Check out the full update here!

The plan for August is to maintain this pace as long as possible and push forward towards completing the project for backers as soon as possible.

In other news, the period for late backers has now ended, and the registration form for that purpose has been removed from the Digital Distribution Tool website. We ended up with a total of 1047 backers (including the late backers) for this project. I can't express how thankful I am for each and every one of them. This project was made possible by their generous support.

Monster of the Month #4: Kishi

Another Monster of the Month has been released by AAW Games today! Available for both 5th Edition and Pathfinder RPG.

"In its natural form, a Kishi has a snarling and salivating hyena’s face on the back of its head and a bestial bipedal body. Kishi are only summoned when mere murder is not sufficient revenge, and the complete destruction of an enemy is desired, a relished task for the narcisitic Kishi.

The Kishi are masters of lying with the truth, and all facts twist and bend to suit their chosen narrative. In this way, the devils can patiently undermine cherished beliefs and self-esteem. While this may incidentally claims souls for the denizens of Hell, these social predators simply take great pleasure in transforming strong-willed people into depressed, dependent husks.

Kishi carefully embed themselves into a target’s life as a friend or lover. From there they wear away at everything good within the target: destroying confidence, altering memories, and poisoning all other relationships. The victim grows increasingly reliant on the devil, and certain they deserve the suffering inflicted. It can be incredibly difficult to recover from a Kishi’s physical and emotional abuse, and the devils seldom willingly allow prey an opportunity to rebuild a shattered psyche."

Monster of the Month brings to life a new monster from ancient folklore every single month for both Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition and the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Created using actual folklore gathered by Justin Andrew Mason then expertly illustrated by AAW Games' lead artist Mates Laurentiu (Romania), the monsters are then crafted by Stephen Rowe (Pathfinder RPG) and Chris Harris (5th Edition). Leonid Ponomarev is also converting both versions over for use in the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop.

Get the Monster of the Month #4: Varpulis (from African Mythology) available for purchase via Adventureaweek.com (PFRPG/5E), DriveThruRPG (PFRPG/5E), RPGNow (PFRPG/5E), Paizo (PFRPG).

The End of a Journey

It’s been a challenging journey through the wintery gale, but the quest has been victorious. As of yesterday’s release by AAW Games, the last the pending content for the "Into the Wintery Gale" series was set loose into the wild (sans the final Fantasy Grounds VTT conversions which are nearing completion presently).

There were moments of conflict and stressful encounters to contend with, unforeseen challenges and unexpected setbacks, exhaustion, serious physical injuries, and the mourning the loss of family and loved ones. We undoubtedly underestimated the challenge we were committing to, yet the team weathered the storm; ever focused on completing the trek. Many lessons were learned, new friendships were forged, existing bonds tested and strengthened, and many new skills were acquired.

Standing here now gazing across what we created, I feel accomplished. We created something I’m proud to be a part of.

I won’t lie: it’s a journey I was more than ready to complete, but it was also an adventure I’ll never forget. I think I’m ready to advert my eyes from the wintery white for a while to focus on writing adventures in warmer climates, maybe a few palm trees?

My gratitude and eternal thanks to the entire AAW Games Team who toiled to make this series a reality. And, many thanks to the Kickstarter backers who made it possible. You are all amazing.

What started off as a goal of writing a 100-page adventure module became a sizable series containing over 600-pages of combined content. One hardcover book, five additional books, three decks of cards, GM screen, two huge battle maps, miniatures, terrain, tokens, and Fantasy Grounds VTT content… consisting of 15 Vikmordere-themed dungeon adventures, 40 detailed encounters (each a sidequest in their own right), over 40 new monsters, over 50 new magic items, 12 new feats, 6 new spells, new and unique gear and equipment, dozens of new puzzles, and expanded rules covering: hypothermia, frostbite, battlechants, runepainting, and tons of unique culture, setting, and overworld travel content.
The Complete Series includes the following:

City of Talos in Print!

The 5th Edition adventure and gazetteer for "The City of Talos" published by Dark Naga Adventures has gone to print! I did nearly two dozen pieces of detailed cartography for these books, including the full-color two-page spread map of the City of Talos (pictured to the right).

"After the events of The Buried Zikurat, the characters return to the city of Meawold to report to the Minister of Interior Affairs Edmur and enjoy the fruits of their labor. After tiring of the delights of Meawold, and possibly running a bit low on coin, they decide the time has come to accept the invitation from Sherin Po-thole and enter Talos as honored guests, something no surface dweller has ever done. "

Captain's Log: Starfinder!

It has finally been officially announced that I will be a part of the AAW Games Starfinder Team. In truth, I've already been working on content for months during and after the official play test process from Paizo. There are a lot of really fun things in store for fans of science fiction and science fantasy!

Big Book of Maps: 1st Quarter Project Report

Good news! I just posted the 1st Quarter Project Report for The Big Book of Maps for Tabletop Roleplaying Games reflecting on the first 90-days of the project since the Kickstarter funds cleared.

As of this morning I have posted the 100th map! This means that the project is officially past the halfway point, and less remains to be done to complete the project than has already been completed.

The project is 100 days ahead of schedule so I have already completed all of the work scheduled for the next quarter -- and then some!

I have been creating (at least) one full-page map for the project every single day for the past two months.

The stretch goal "Taverns & Storefronts" collection of maps has been completed and released now. This set of maps includes the following:

Bank, Blacksmith, Cellar, Church with Bell Tower, City Bakery, City Infirmary, Corner Pub, Dock Warehouse, Fletcher & Archery Range, General Store, Grain Bin, Guard Garrison and City Gate, Herbalist and Apothecary, Hovels and Abodes (x3), Indoor Bazaar, Inn, Jeweler, Latrines & Outhouses (x3), Library, Magic Shop, Merchant Kiosk (x5), Museum, Pawn Shop, Planned Domicile (Apartments), Potter's Shop & Kiln, Public Bath House, Shanty Town Shacks (x7), Sheriff's Office with Gallows, Small City Park, Taverns (X2), Theatre with Balcony, Town Courthouse, Village Stables, Well Shed, and Windmill. Literally everything needed to completely flesh out a fully-mapped city!

More than half of the "Underworld" two-page spread mega-dungeons have been done as well.

I have also made updates to the Digital Distribution Tool. Most notably a new "Most Recent Map" preview on the sign-in page. I hope this new feature will be useful for those who have been visiting frequently to download maps during the week. Now you can see if a new map has been released since your last visit without having to login and navigate to the map downloads. I also added several inline banners for my new VTT Maps Patreon.

Adventureaweek.com Nominated for 2017 ENnie Award (Best Website)

http://adventureaweek.com/

Over the past couple of years I've worked incredibly hard (and countless hours) along with Adventureaweek.com owner, Jonathan G. Nelson to make the website and the service it provides to subscribers the best it can possibly be.

From developing new software, plugins, and features for the website, to managing blog posts, subscriber updates, and even customer service at times; I've been involved in pretty much every aspect of the company at this point.
I am incredibly proud that the site has been again nominated for an ENnie Award.

Voting is open to the public, and your vote would be greatly appreciated! Click here to cast your vote.
