AetherCon Online RPG Convention Website

After having developed the Speed Painting Duel web app for AetherCon III, I was invited to be on the convention senior staff and asked if I would develop an entirely new web platform for the whole convention to take place on. I agreed to do so, and after several months of development (and dozens of meetings later), AetherCon IV took place on the new website interface that I developed.

New features included front-page managed entry into various "taverns" where live events were taking place, a complete vendors hall interface including a back end for vendors to manage the products they were selling at the convention, Integrated media platform management (videos, wallpapers, downloads, etc.), and a fully integrated cycling advertising system with intelligent referencing (i.e. if a convention attendee was in an area related to RPG miniatures, they would only see ads for RPG miniature manufacturers). The project also included a full integration of custom polling and survey functionality, and the ability to allow attendees to enter various contests and answer after-surveys at the end of the convention.

You can visit the AetherCon website at: http://www.aethercon.com/

Veranthea Codex

Veranthea Codex by Mike Myler and Rogue Genius Games is now available for purchase. I did a tremendous amount of work for the nearly 400-page book including global cartography (5 world maps in all), over one hundred illustrations, all of the pay layout designs, touch-up and modification work for public domain artwork, and the cover layout.

Within these pages are entire player classes, numerous archetypes, new feats, new races, and over 100 base class NPCs perfect for use in any Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Whether you’re an adventurer in the grip of Grethadnis’ internecine conflicts, finding your destiny in Urethiel, advancing your monstrous stake in Trectoyri, searching through the Forever Dark for technological glory, or a player interested in the goblin pistoleer gunslinger, merchanteer paladin, or scientific innovator, or a GM looking for a bigger roster of enemies and challenges for their group—the world’s most radical Pathfinder campaign setting is for you!

Jarrikol Industries Website (Hypercorps 2099)

As part of the launch campaign for the Hypercorps 2099 kickstarter by Mike Myler and Legendary Games, I developed an interactive "themed" website based on "Jarrikol Industries" which is one of the fictional Hypercorporations in the setting. The site provided access to promo videos, free books, character sheets and a mobile app game.

You can view the website here: http://hypercorps2099.com/

Hypercorps 2099: A R.I.P.E. Investment

Hypercorps 2099: A R.I.P.E. Investment by Mike Myler and Legendary Games is now available for free download. I did graphic design and layout elements for this adventure.

Of all the hypercorporations in the world one of the most unique is R.I.P.E., an organic soap and perfume company. Unbeknownst to most these mages and priests use the business as a cover for acquiring rare and esoteric (but organic!) reagents for their spells without raising suspicion. One of their means to do so is by shipping across the Great Lakes and into the harbor of the wasteland that’s become of Cleveland. The operators are hired either to defend one of R.I.P.E.’s freight trucks and deliver it to a secure location, or take it for a shadowy organization with insidious intent (but much better pay). Whichever they choose, it’s probably not good for Cleveland.

You can download this adventure via Legendary Games, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, and Paizo.

To Stake a Vampire

To Stake a Vampire by EN Publishing is now available for purchase. This adventure contains my cartography -- five cavernous maps.

Evil has awoken in Holdenshire! The dead leaves of autumn’s passing are nowhere to be seen in the blustery cold of the harsh winter that grips the countryside. Windows and doors are shuttered against the elements, and the few townsfolk walking the hills and paths in Holdenshire are bundled up tightly, moving at a brisk gait that warrants no interruption.

A dismal sense of despair permeates the very air in Hengistbury and Thornbury, turning the once friendly townsfolk into standoffish shut-ins. Bats, rats, and wolves  are becoming more common in the once safe hills and valleys of Holdenshire. Perhaps worst of all, Lord Pemberton has fallen ill and governance of the land has waned during  this harshest of seasons.

The sequel to the acclaimed TO SLAY A DRAGON, this adventure can also be used as a standalone horror-themed adventure.  Can the heroes uncover the cause of the curse, and defeat the evil infecting the land?

This book can be purchased via DriveThruRPG and RPGNow.

Within the cybernetic landscape are trillions of users and countless servers, creating a frontier for adventure by the technologically adept or those powerful enough to traverse to other planes of existence.

This book can be downloaded via Legendary Games, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, and Paizo.

5th Edition Compatible Logo

With the recent announcement that Adventureaweek.com will begin supporting 5th Edition products, I have created a 5th Edition (5E) compatible logo for AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com. The design has been approved, and will be used on all their new 5th Edition products.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT USING THIS LOGO

Posted on 5/9/2020

While I'm stoked so many people like the 5E Compatible logo that I designed several years back when 5E launched, I created the graphic under contract to AAW GAMES and they retain exclusive rights to it. I still get 2-3 e-mail requests each week from folks wanting to use it on their products -- I tend to come across it used without permission on published/promoted projects even more frequently than that.

When asked, I always direct folks to inquire directly to AAW Games before using it, but to my knowledge, this logo remains specific to the hundreds of AAW Games 5th Edition titles.

I'm certainly not going to become the "IP police", but when I come across a relatively high-profile product using it as I did this afternoon, it prompts me to post this as a friendly reminder.

Thanks -- Justin

Another Mini-Dungeon I wrote is now available for purchase. The Lapis Maiden of Serena Hortum is an adventure for 4-6 PCs level 6.

The desert settlement of Serena Hortum is located at the heart of an oasis that is surrounded by a vast desert. The only source of water and reprieve from the scorching sun for a hundred miles, the city is a regular stop for those who traverse the surrounding sand buried wasteland. This has brought great wealth and prosperity to the city, but it has also invited corruption that lingers just beneath its immaculate façade.

Snow White

Snow White from AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com is now available for purchase. I was heavily involved in this project including contributing content as an author, graphic and layout design, the cover design, an tons of advertisement designs to promote sales.

Love is firmly in the northern air of the Klavek Kingdom, as what started as a marriage of political practicality has turned into the real thing. The Prince of the mighty Klavek Kingdom has met the true love of his life, Lumi Valtatytar, daughter of Lord Herttua Valta of Morsain. Lumi is loved by everyone for her intelligence, kindness, and not least, for her grace and beauty (which are beyond compare).

But the path of true love rarely runs smoothly; the PCs, initially there to help at the wedding, find themselves involved with assassination attempts, political intrigue, dastardly machinations, insurgents, and even murder! At every turn, someone or something seems determined to stop the party from getting Lumi to the church on time. Who is behind all these devious mischief and can they be caught? There’s plenty for the PCs to reflect on as they make every effort to ensure the marriage of the year goes ahead, while fighting to clear their names at the same time.

Suddenly and without warning, Lumi disappears; the party is responsible for tracking her down and returning her safely to Castle Morsain. Their quest won’t be easy as they must first enter the dreaded Haunted Forest and deal with the seven short folk responsible for Lumi’s abduction.

During their journey the PCs must evade a bottomless pit ravenously following them through the woods, explore the fabled Feyglade, and escape a forest maze and its minotaur guardian. Then the party will come face-to-face with the short folk and a wizened crone before rescuing Lumi and returning to Morsain, where they find themselves under attack as someone tries to prevent them from getting back to the castle.

Into the Wintery Gale: Custom Dice

As part of the "Into the Wintery Gale" series I'm designing for AAW Games, I also designed a trio of custom dice with elaborate Viking-esque runes gilded upon them. In the end, due to concerns with packaging and handling (we couldn't find a way to get them drop shipped with the books), they were dropped from the lineup. But the prototypes were absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't help but share them here. They would have been a fun add-on for the Kickstarter campaign, and (who knows?) maybe one day they'll still be added to the series line-up.

Return to the Crypt of the Sun Lord

Return to the Crypt of the Sun Lord by AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com is now available for purchase. I did cartography as well as the cover art and design for this adventure written by Jonathan G. Nelson and Stephen Yeardley.

A Pathfinder compatible adventure for four to six PCs of levels 6-8
The temple bells rang out, their crystal hollow-overtones calling gently to the dispersed worshippers dwelling within the underground sun temple. The Temple of the Sun was itself an enigma, a place dedicated to the sun but hidden far underground, shielded from the mighty rays of the light of life, forced to do so for both secrecy and protection. Internal holy radiance was the heart of the temple, bathing Flaesuros' children with the light of the holy orb of light, emanations from a Sliver of the Sun, an actual piece of the massive orb of life above; this was the logic behind the temple's secrecy, her many levels of protection and traps, the reason why priests who fervently revered light now clung to the shadows.
Return to Crypt of the Sun Lord is a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game compatible adventure for four to six PCs of levels 6-8 and includes:
  • Puzzles to keep your players engaged and inspired
  • New monsters including the Skeletal Ash Beast
  • Ancient runes which can be used to solve puzzles and advance in the crypt
  • A new magic item which may be donned by a single PC to great effect
  • An artifact which has the potential to either change the world or destroy it

This product can be purchased via Adventureaweek.com, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, and Paizo.

The Community Dungeon

The Community Dungeon by AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com is now available for purchase. I authored a few rooms and created a few new monsters  for this old school dungeon crawl.

A D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder compatible adventure designed for four to six PCs of levels 2-3
88 pages of pure old school dungeon!
It all started with a post on the world’s most popular social networking website. “How would
you like to write up your own room in our first ever community dungeon?” I wanted to build an old school dungeon with likeminded folks, throwing the typical adventure building model out the window and starting from scratch with a bunch of empty rooms and only our incredible imaginations to fill the gap. What started off as a simple idea turned into a very complicated process which I can only describe as “herding cats”. However, almost two years later here we are! Our first community dungeon adventure is done and with it the chance to do another. If you love this adventure please share your thoughts with us! Post on our forum at AdventureAWeek.com, send us email, go outside and scream about us to the sky and moon. If you the reader, the GM, the old school dungeon lover wants more we would be more than happy to oblige...and if you want to be a part of the next dungeon... well you better get your manuscript ready, it will be here before you know it!
-Jonathan G. Nelson
Author/Publisher/Owner/Bard
AAW Games

In ages past, a dungeon was created.  Designers, engineers, and trapmakers from every land were brought together to create this insidious vault.  Is it a temple to some unknown and forgotten god?  The keep of a mad warlord?  The crypt of a necromancer?  A test to see which adventures can pass and return with pockets full of treasure and which fail and are never see again?  The only way to find out is to enter and see if you survive.
Also included in "The Community Dungeon":
  • Cartography by Wizards of the Coast mapmaker Jared Blando
  • Multiple puzzles to keep the PCs and players alike on their toes
  • Rooms created by dozens of different game designers
  • New monsters such as the Llacum parum succubus and the sailfin dragon

This book can be purchased via Adventureaweek.com, DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, and Paizo.

The expedition to Gilead has been shattered from within. Mad with greed for a golden idol, the explorers turned daggers on their peers, murdering one another in paranoia and rage. The victorious killers show signs of demonic possession, and now stalk the jungle in pursuit of their missing treasure. Sent to discover the fate of the expedition, the PCs find themselves deep in the heart of madness far from any civilization. Can they unravel the secrets of Gilead and find the golden treasure before an ancient evil is brought back into the world?

Dire, Devilish Deeds

The complete Dire, Devilish Deeds adventure path by AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com is now available for purchase. I created the artwork and graphics for the dozens of puzzles and riddles included in this series of adventures written by Stephen Yeardly.

A Pathfinder/3.5 Compatible Adventure Path for 3-6 PCs of Any Level.

Arcineum Devaneas 1 - Magic weaves its way through everyone's life, whether they realize it or not. Its energy flows all around them, from the simplest cantrip or orison all the way to the mightiest spells that shake worlds. But the one thing that seems stronger than magic itself is the disagreement between those that wield as to whether divine or arcane energies hold sway; this argument has continued since the birth of the gods!

Arcineum Devaneas 2 - Deep within the gauntlet that is Olemus Multa’s testing ground, the party is finding that championing a druid can have its unsettling moments! The chance to find out “how the other half live and die” is a rare one, and understanding the tooth and claw, sting and constricting coils of what would usually be a foe is both alien and liberating. Yet there is clearly more to come, because as you catch your breath after the first few tests, the path forward continues to lead to another gateway, another puzzle, and another challenging experience.

Devaneas Arcineum 1 - Every coin has two sides, every discussion at least two points of view, and magic is no different. If it came from just one source, think how much more straightforward being a spellcaster would be! But magic is strange and fascinating, a force that beguiles and can promise much whilst delivering little. Supporters of its varied sources and uses abound, putting their point of view forward whenever possible.

Devaneas Arcineum 2 - So far, so good, or at least it seems. For as you delve deeper into the challenge that is Maaginen Jekku’s testing ground, you find yourself facing more demanding puzzles and stouter foes. Yes, the rewards continue to be valuable, but the constant changes mean you have to frequently and suddenly adapt to new events and circumstance. How many more times will you have to face dealing with being in another body, another form entirely? Perhaps not too many more.

Varakt's Halo: The Great Pubo Hunt

Varakt's Halo: The Great Pubo Hunt by AAW Games/Adventureaweek.com is now available for purchase. I contributed cartography, artwork, and graphic design to this adventure written by Mike Myler.

The PCs wake up shipwrecked on an isolated island, unable to escape the archipelago while the unnaturally active volcanoes that surround it continue to generate vicious currents and tumultuous weather patterns. After awakening they are ambushed by aquatic savages before being introduced to one of the island's two unique native races. The PCs are tasked with saving the beleaguered tribe by completing an annual ritual and capturing a pubo, a misshapen and clumsy landlocked bird. This typically simple task will prove to be a far more dangerous endeavor than they expect however and they soon find themselves to be the prey! Should they survive the encounter the mystery of what plagues the dwindling population of islanders is slowly revealed in this first module in the Varakt's Halo adventure path!
